I was not a friend to you. Not for a long time.My hands dipped in silver, immodest, demanded with a power out of your depth. You despised it as much as I delighted in it. We had grown up dazzled by the same sun yet breathed different air.It did not matter much. I wish I had told you sooner.

- ambiant: drinks for two

Etho looks to eyes full of September sun and worn-over pavement high above him. A crooning, off-key voice carries through the room, layering over the chatter and clink of glassware, enveloping a warmth around the lonely and bored. It's subdued like the low light from a campfire, crackling as wood chars to charcoal. Every so often it sparks, glinting through those deep, shining eyes."Admiring my looks?" Bdubs' tone bears down on him, loose from the alcohol oiling his throat.

It all ends on a Saturday morning. Less than three months after their first meeting.Grian feels stupid. Scar had called them Family; was there ever a moment They wouldn’t come looking?Large, ethereal Beings of destruction knock on his door like friends coming for dinner; a farce of good will and pleasantries. Grian knows he’s doomed the moment the door creaks open on its own, his hand just barely hovering over the doorknob.

- tender: another light

Desperately, deep within his chest, among the beating flesh of his heart and the small light of his soul, Scar hopes Grian wins. This isn’t something he will admit, not even to himself. But, god, he wants it.He leans ever-so closer against the rough tabletop, elbow digging into the grooves of wood like a burrowing bug. Grian gravitates his way as well, practically falling off the edge of the bench as a hand raises up and slowly grazes against Scar’s arm. It tickles like a zap of lightning, rocketing through his arms all the way up to his brain where a chill coats the bottom of his neck.

He feels his bones popping from their sockets, dragging sick strings of gore that cling to the snapping cartilage. His skin tears around the base of his wings, blooming red as deep as Scar’s eyes. His own eyes match, he reminds himself. His untouched wing beats madly against the ground, nearly lifting Grian’s one side with its violent thrashing. He can feel one of his hands clawing frantically at the dirt path, but he registers he has no control. His other hand spasms uselessly as the pain seeps from his back to the tips of his fingers. His body is on fire.
